Vitality 101: Are You Suppressing Your Body’s Natural Healing Response?

[HERO] Vitality 101: Are You Suppressing Your Body’s Natural Healing Response?

I get it. You have a million things to do. Your calendar is packed, your kids have practice, and you have a meeting that you simply cannot miss. When a scratchy throat or a sudden fever shows up, the most natural instinct in our modern world is to reach for the quickest fix possible. We want the pill that dries up the mucus, the liquid that knocks out the fever, and the caffeine that pushes us through the fatigue.

But what if I told you that by silencing those symptoms, you might actually be turning off your body’s best defense system?

In my practice, I often talk about the roots of naturopathic medicine. One of my favorite "old school" philosophers is Henry Lindlahr. He wrote a groundbreaking book called Nature Cure over a century ago. His ideas were radical then, and honestly, they feel even more radical now. Lindlahr believed that most of what we call "disease" is actually the body’s desperate attempt to clean itself out and heal. He called this the "Unity of Disease."

Essentially, your body isn't trying to annoy you with a runny nose. It is trying to save you.

The Philosophy of the Healing Fire

Lindlahr’s core idea was that symptoms are an expression of vitality, not a sign of failure. Think of a fever like a controlled burn in a forest. It looks scary and intense, but it is clearing out the dead brush so that new growth can happen. When we suppress that "healing fire" with medication before it has finished its job, we leave the debris behind.

In the world of Nature Cure, we call this suppression versus expression. When the body expresses a symptom, it is moving toxins out. When we suppress it, we push those problems deeper into the tissues. Over years and decades, this "pushing down" of acute issues can contribute to the chronic metabolic struggles many of us face later in life.

A Mother’s Perspective: The Fever Dilemma

I’ve had to live this philosophy myself, and I know how hard it can be. As a parent, there is nothing more heart-wrenching than seeing your child flushed with a fever. Your gut reaction is to make it stop immediately.

I remember a time when one of my own children caught a typical schoolyard bug. The fever climbed, and the "physician" side of my brain started debating with the "mama" side of my brain. I knew that the fever was stimulating their immune system and creating an environment where the virus couldn't thrive. I chose to support the fever rather than suppress it. We used homeopathic remedies, "magic" warming socks, lots of hydration, removed any dietary obstacles, and simple herbal support.

Was it a long night? Yes. But the next morning, my child woke up with a level of clarity and energy that was astounding. Her body had finished the "cleanup" work. It doesn't always happen that fast, but often faster than if suppressive medicines were involved. When we allow these processes to happen (safely and with professional guidance, of course), we are actually training the immune system to be more resilient for the future.

Perimenopause and the Metabolic Message

For my patients navigating perimenopause, this concept of suppression is equally vital. So often, we view things like night sweats, sudden weight gain, or brain fog as "glitches" that need to be turned off. We want to suppress the discomfort so we can get back to "normal."

But perimenopause is a massive metabolic shift. Your body is communicating that the old way of doing things is no longer working. If we just mask the hot flashes without looking at the underlying metabolic health, we miss the opportunity to fix the foundation.

Lindlahr argued that "vitality" is the primary force of healing. If your vitality is low because of chronic stress, poor nutrition, or years of suppressing minor illnesses, your transition through menopause might feel like a mountain climb instead of a natural shift. By focusing on root-cause healing, we aren't just trying to make the symptoms go away. We are trying to build up your "life force" so your body can handle the transition with grace.

The "Healing Crisis" vs. Getting Sicker

One of the most famous concepts from Lindlahr is the "Healing Crisis." This is the idea that as you start to get healthy, you might actually feel a little worse for a short period. Have you ever started a clean eating plan or a new supplement protocol and suddenly felt a bit of a headache or some fatigue?

That isn't necessarily a bad sign. It often means your body finally has enough energy to start doing the "deep cleaning" it has been putting off for years. It is moving toxins out of storage and into the bloodstream to be eliminated.

I’ve seen this with many patients who come to me for metabolic concerns. We start working on their blood sugar and gut health, and for a few days, they feel "off." I always tell them: "Stay the course. Your body is just reorganizing." When they push through that expression phase, they come out the other side with more energy than they’ve had in a decade.

How to Support Instead of Suppress

So, how do we move from a mindset of suppression to a mindset of support? It starts with a little bit of trust in your own biology. Here are a few ways to begin:

  • Listen to the Whisper: Don't wait for your body to scream. If you feel tired, rest. If you aren't hungry, don't force a heavy meal.

  • Hydrate for Elimination: If your body is trying to clear things out, give it the water it needs to flush the system.

  • Simple Nourishment: When you are in an acute "healing" phase, stick to easy-to-digest foods like broths or teas. This allows your energy to go toward healing rather than digestion.

  • Sunlight and Fresh Air: Lindlahr was a huge fan of "Air Baths." Even just ten minutes of fresh air can boost your vitality and help your nervous system shift out of "fight or flight" mode.
